The area became the British colony of the Gold Coast in 1874. As part of the Commonwealth under the leadership of Kwame Nkrumah Ghana achieved independence from the United Kingdom in 1957, becoming the first African nation to do so.
In 2019, President of Ghana Nana Akufo-Addo introduced an initiative intended to encourage the African diasporas to come to Africa (specifically Ghana) to settle and invest in the continent of Africa. The year 2019 is symbolic as it commemorates 400 years since the first enslaved Africans touched down in Jamestown Virginia in the United States. The momentum of the African spirit continues beyond 2019.
